My Mission Statement
Some have asked me about my work ethic. Oft times I ask this of myself. I also ask, how is it that you've received so many awards of recognition throughout your career? I simply go to work on time each day, and fulfill my duties the best that I can. It would take a long time but perhaps I could count up my many failures. All I can say is that I have remained positive and motivated to press on being "Never Better" in spite of the set back.
And, there really is a method to how I live my life, a method to my madness if you will. For decades I've implemented this mission statement in my life. It came from a talk I heard at age 22.
There are four methods to perform what's right. Four reasons to live, work and act.
1. You can perform your duties because you're forced to do them. I suppose someone could come to my room early in the morning, rip me out of bed, and haul me to work, and force me to perform my duties. The fruits of this labor, however, would be futile. A common quote: A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still. No motivation to self actualize. Each person is left to grind out their life under a badge of mourning, defiance, and frustration. No reason to care about your performance or your assistance rendered to others-a stalemate. In the end, a person ends up completely useless. Totally submissive to let another govern their lives. Complete dependence on the system. No growth, no happiness, and no fulfillment.
2. You can perform your duties because you're afraid of the consequences. Sadly this level of motivation holds numerous people captive. In fact, fear has gripped many leaders of our great nation. Fear encompasses them causing them to reduce themselves to hatred, lying, cover-ups, scandals, deceit, an failure to perform their responsibilities. I have acted at this level. I'm happy to say that when I find myself being acted upon because of my fear it's appalling to me and I try to break free immediately. There are no building blocks here. Extremely little or no increases in faith, love, and other qualities of Christ. Fulfillment, growth and happiness are at a dreadful low.
3. You can perform your duties because you want the reward. Undoubtedly a majority of people find themselves in this category. Go to work, get the work done and collect your paycheck. This leads to some growth. A person may become a little more results oriented, and some goals might be reached. The problem is that a person will do what's necessary but nothing or not much more. This level is good. It provides some growth, some happiness and fulfillment. The end result is that a person will likely not find out what his or her best self is.
4. You can perform your
duties because you love your Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus
Christ, yourself, and everyone you
meet. This is a wondrous level. You are free to act and not be acted
upon. You self actualize. There is no limit to your potential as you
strive to become as your Savior and Redeemer by striving to do as he
would do. There is a fullness of joy, of gladness, peace, growth and
fulfillment. Our loving Father's work and glory is our growth and
fulfillment. His plan is set so that we might learn and grow and
become even as he is. And what's most profound is we can't obtain
that kind of growth on our own. Only through the grace of our Savior
can we become as he is. His grace, his enabling power helps us over
the areas we cannot accomplish on our own. At this level there is
love, peace and harmony. Kindness, forgiveness, empathy, yea, all
the wondrous qualities of Christ. But don't get the wrong
impression. Such a person is not a doormat. If the adversary is
intent on robbing him of peace, of his home, livelihood, or family
he will fight and he will fight in the strength and wisdom of God.
Not a good idea to go up against him. As a popular movie portrays- you will fail. The end result in some future date is a person
who possesses all the Father has. This is this level I choose. I run
to work everyday that I might show my excitement for the
opportunities that will be presented. My mission statement is to
love everyone in front of me and have a positive attitude regardless of what happens. The
hospital's mission statement, quote: above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life," is included in this statement. I know,
I was recognized for my efforts today. No wonder that on the first
two commandments hang all the law and the prophets, 1) Love the Lord
God with all your heart might mind and strength, and the second is
like unto it, 2)
