Our Commander and Chief
My Hope and Prayer
My Desire to Act
I don't wish to elaborate on our current leader. Any knowledgeable American can see the fruits that follow him. It's sufficient to say the condition of our beloved homeland and world standing is pitiful. Lies, deceit, scandals, weakness, and corruption are commonly used words that describe our countries current leadership. Truly, the end, that great and dreadful day spoken of all through scripture is imminent if we continue our current course.
But we can always hope, we can always dream of a commander and chief that will stay the heavens a while longer. The man or woman I long to see in the Whitehouse would be like an army captain who lived in this land now called America 75 years before our Savior was born in the flesh. His name was Moroni.
Moroni took command of his army at age 25. His design and that of his people was to support their lands, their houses, their wives, and children that they might preserve them from their enemies. And also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, and also their liberty, that they might worship God according to their desires.
For they knew of the extreme hatred towards them, that if they should fall into the hands of the enemy, whosoever should worship God in spirit and truth would be put to death.
Moroni prepared his people. When he met the enemy in the land of Jershon they would not fight him. For Moroni had prepared his people with breastplates, and arm-shields, helmets, and thick clothing. The enemy was frustrated and fearful and would not fight them for they were naked except for the skins that covered them. They fled to fight elsewhere.
Moroni did not stop there. He sent spies to learn of their intentions. He also knew of a Prophet of God. He sent men to ask him to inquire of the Lord where his armies should go to defend themselves. The word of the Lord came to his Prophet and he informed the messengers of Moroni where they should go to defend themselves.
The enemy came to the specified location described by the Prophet. Moroni had positioned his armies with every stratagem possible. The work of death commenced on both sides. Even the armor that protected Moroni's Army could not save them all. Many of the head plates were cut in two, breastplates were pierced, and their arms cut off.
Seeing that his army was about to fall Moroni inspired their hearts with thoughts of their lands, liberty, and freedom from bondage. Even though the enemy was double their number, they began to triumph in that very hour.
The enemy defeated, Moroni commanded them to give up their weapons, and swear an oath of peace. The enemy leader said they would give up their weapons but their hatred was too strong and they would again seek war.
I cannot recall my words Moroni stated. You will deliver up your weapons and swear an oath of peace. The battle commenced again in which the entire enemy army was nearly destroyed. There was no alternative--death or the oath. The oath was made, and peace resumed.
A year or two later, again the enemy under a different leader prepared for war. Only this time they were prepared with armor as well. And there was another serious problem. Many of the people that were so-called righteous were dissenting. Some of them even going over to the enemy. There was great division among the people.
What could a commander and chief do in such circumstances? Moroni rent his coat and took a piece thereof and wrote upon it "In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives and our children." and fastened it upon the end of a pole.
And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land.
And he said: Surely God shall not suffer that we, who are despised because we take upon us the name of Christ, shall be trodden down and destroyed, until we bring it upon us by our own transgressions.
And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth among the people, waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part, and crying with a loud voice, saying:
Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord, and enter into a covenant that they will maintain their rights, and their religion, that the Lord God may bless them.
And the people came running together with their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God.
The enemy gathered together a numerous army, and prepared to destroy Moroni and his armies. But Moroni never let up preparing the minds of his people, nor in his stratagems for battle. He erected huge banks of earth, and walls of stone to encircle his cities, and borders of their lands. In the weakest fortifications he placed the stronger armies.
Again the enemy was frustrated and beaten. When they tried to climb the walls they were cut down easily by the stones and arrows of the armies of Moroni.
Moroni was faced with a final challenge. The good leaders of the government were overthrown, and pushed out of the headquarters of the land. The new evil leaders planned to make an alliance with the enemy in which they could all receive positions of power and control.
Moroni, though his armies were weakened because of the lack of support from his government, took his armies to the center of the land. He conquered this movement of evilness, and restored the righteous leaders to the judgement seats. The inner vessel cleansed, he returned to battle the enemy which he easily overthrew because there was no further division amongst his own people.
This is what was said of Moroni: And Moroni was a strong and a mighty man; he was a man of a perfect understanding; a man that did not delight in bloodshed; a man whose soul did joy in the liberty and the freedom of his country, and his brethren from bondage and slavery;
A man whose heart did swell with thanksgiving to his God, for the many privileges and blessings which he bestowed upon his people; a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people.
And he was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood.
If all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; and the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
This story took place over 2000 years ago, but was preserved and written for our day. This is the character of people we must be as this same war rages on. Let's hope, pray, and do all we can to preserve our freedom, and...let's get a leader like Moroni in the Whitehouse.
